LMU Staff Senate nominations open in the spring semester; all LMU staff may submit nominations and all LMU staff are eligible to vote. All senator positions are "at large," signifying that each senator is elected by the entire staff as a whole, as opposed to being elected by individual divisions or departments.

Staff must complete 1 full year of employment at LMU as a permanent employee prior to accepting a nomination to the senate. Once a senator has accepted their nomination, the Staff Senate Elections Committee will contact the eligible nominees' supervisors and seek written approval that the nominee's senate service will not interfere with the normal functions or execution of their duties. Once the nominee has been deemed eligible, accepted the nomination, and their supervisor has approved their candidacy, the nominee's name will be added to the ballot.

Senators serve for a term of 3 years and may be eligible for reelection for 1 successive term. After 2 successive terms (6 years), a senator must take a minimum of a 1-year hiatus before pursuing reelection to the senate.

Senate terms commence on the day of the annual August meeting following the spring election and conclude in the senator's third year on the day prior to new senator orientation.
