Staff Awards

LMU Staff Senate presents three staff awards annually. Nominations open in the spring semester, and all LMU staff, faculty, and administrators may submit nominations. The recipients are chosen by Staff Senate and announced during Staff Appreciation Week in May.

Barbara Bonney Staff Member of the Year

Open to Loyola Marymount University Staff

The Barbara Bonney Staff Member of the Year award is presented annually to a staff member of the Westchester campus who has shown continued excellence in one's professional area.

Nominees should consistently demonstrate commitment to the ideals of higher education, leadership and initiative within one's area or the university as a whole, a unique contribution to improving the quality of life at LMU, public service to the LMU community, and a commitment to improving the relationship between the staff and university by developing projects or participating in events that serve this purpose.

  • Barbara joined the LMU staff in 1977 and worked in multiple departments including library services, College of Science and Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, Learning Resource Center, Office of the Vice President for Finance and Planning, and served as Executive Secretary for Presidents Loughran and O’Malley. In addition to performing her job flawlessly, Barbara was the person everyone went to with odd questions. She was the expert on topics as varied as grammar and etiquette to LMU basketball statistics. She was kind to all, gracious, worked very hard, had a wonderful sense of humor, loved LMU and did whatever necessary to make life easier for our community. Barbara was posthumously awarded the very first staff award in 1996, and this award is named in her honor.

Open to Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School Staff

The Ignatian Service Award recognizes an exceptional commitment to the service of students, the university, and the community at large, in the spirit of the religious and moral legacy of St. Ignatius. The awardee shall be a full-time staff member who has demonstrated an ongoing and creative commitment to the realization of this legacy through their actions and accomplishments.

Nominees should consistently demonstrate one or more of the following: embodying Ignatian values in their work, volunteering time and talents to create lasting positive change, or inspiring and empowering others to serve the community through leadership and mentorship.

  • St. Ignatius of Loyola was one of the most influential figures in the Catholic Church. He was the founder and leader of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, and also wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a set of meditations and prayers that have guided millions of people, for which he was declared a patron saint of all spiritual retreats. He encouraged each of us to “find God in all things,” and act “for the greater glory of God.” Learn more.

Open to Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School Staff

The Outstanding Teamwork Award recognizes and honors a team of staff (defined as 3 or more people) who have harmonized their efforts to the betterment of the LMU community with an emphasis on creative co-design, collaboration, and cross-departmental/divisional teamwork.

During the past academic year, nominees should have demonstrated one or more of the following: inclusively utilized each team member's skills and perspectives, ensured meaningful contributions from every team member toward a shared goal, or exhibited resilience in the face of adversity.
