Throughout the year, the External Relations team actively pursues new opportunities to collaborate and engage with elected officials, aiming to build strong relationships and elevate the university's profile both in Los Angeles and beyond.

Rep. Ted Lieu's Congressional App Challenge

 

LMU External Relations team with Congressman Ted Lieu

In the Congressional App Challenge, middle and high school students who live or attend school in Rep. Lieu’s district were invited to create an app of any kind. LMU External Relations co-hosted a private event on campus with Rep. Lieu and his staff, during which the students demonstrated their apps and Rep. Lieu recognized winners of the challenge.

The Coehlo Center Dedication with Mayor Karen Bass

In October 2024, External Relations welcomed Mayor Karen Bass to LMU for the dedication of The Coelho Center for Disability Law, Policy, and Innovation. Mayor Bass delivered remarks before cutting a ceremonial ribbon and then spent time talking with LMU students.

2024 Rams Training Camp

LMU’s historic partnership with the Los Angeles Rams brought the opportunity to host the team’s 2025 Training Camp on campus last summer. External Relations welcomed elected officials, including L.A. City Councilmember Traci Park (pictured), to the event for a day of fun and to learn about the partnership’s benefits to our students and the community.

2024 Senate Debate

LMU sponsored the the Feb. 20 U.S. Senate Debate on NBC4/KNBC and Telemundo 52/KVEA, putting LMU branding in front of a national television audience. External Relations invited two student journalists from The Loyolan to attend and facilitated their introductions and interviews with moderators and some candidates. External Relations also facilitated the recording of the LMU Consort Singers performing the national anthem in Sacred Heart Chapel, which aired before the debate.
