Fun Times Outside the Office

Staff Senate Hosts Holiday Party and Athletics Tailgates

LMU staff closed out 2014 in style with a masquerade party to celebrate the holiday season.  More than 300 staff members attended the annual staff holiday party on December 5 which included a buffet, photo booth, dancing, a canned food drive, raffles, contests and more.

Shirley Compton, a new staff member in Student Affairs, attended the staff holiday party for the first time.  Like many on campus, her department held its own holiday gathering, but the masquerade party hosted by Staff Senate gave her the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with colleagues from other departments and to engage more deeply with staff members who she does not get to see very often.  The highlights for her were the musical performance by LMU's Notetorious student a cappella group and taking photos with Iggy.

It was a festive end to the 2014 calendar year and Staff Senate thanks all who attended.  To view photos from the event, click here

The 2014-15 school year has also seen the addition of many more Staff Senate hosted tailgates prior to LMU Athletics' games. The tailgates and games are free for LMU staff members and guests are always welcome.

On Thursday, Jan. 15, more than 125 staff, faculty and guests were treated to a taco bar and refreshments in the Burns Recreation Center parking lot followed by a victory when our LMU Men's Basketball team beat the University of Portland. Then on Thursday, Feb.12, staff gathered again in the atrium outside of Gersten Pavilion, ate hot dogs and pretzels and drank beer before cheering on our Women's Basketball team as they took on conference rival, Gonzaga.

Elmo Johnson has attended two tailgates this year with his colleagues in Conference Services.  Although it is sometimes difficult for him to attend the actual games, he said he enjoys attending the tailgates because he gets to spend time with his coworkers outside of the office.  He also shared that it is a "great way to meet individuals whose paths don't cross with yours on a daily or even annual basis."  He encourages the senate to continue to provide opportunities for staff and even suggested interdepartmental competitions such as softball, volleyball or flag football games.

Marianna Villa in University Relations said she also has enjoyed participating in the staff tailgates. She has attended three this year with her five-year-old daughter, Paloma, who attends nearby Playa Vista Elementary School.  It is a great way to see friends and colleagues from different departments across campus and she said she also enjoys sharing the experience with her daughter.  She said she appreciates that staff are encouraged to bring their families to the tailgates and the games.

If you have not yet had the chance to attend one of these events, don't worry.  There is one final tailgate scheduled to take place before the end of this Fiscal Year.  Hope to see you all on Friday, April 10 before the Men's Baseball game against BYU.

LMU Staff Senate is dedicated to providing opportunities for staff engagement.  If you have any suggestions, please share them by emailing staffsenate@lmu.edu or by submitting your feedback here.
