Briana Maturi Receives 2017 Barbara Bonney Award
Every year, one of the best and the brightest among Loyola Marymount University’s staff is presented the Barbara Bonney Staff Member of the Year Award at the Annual Staff Services Awards Luncheon. This year Briana Maturi of Student Affairs was so honored. The award is given to the staff member of the Westchester Campus who has shown continued excellence in their professional area; commitment to the ideals of higher education; leadership and initiative within their area or the university as a whole; a unique contribution to improving the quality of life at LMU; and public service to the LMU community.
She was nominated by two fellow staffers with words which were most enlightening about her character and dedication. Julia Keighley, Associate Director of Student Success, submitted that “Briana las led LMU’s education initiatives for student around healthy relationships, consent, bystander intervention, hooking up, alcohol and drugs and intercultural dialogue. She built curriculum from the ground up that has been rolled out to all incoming students and she has still made time to make sure her fellow staff members receive necessary professional development on these topics as well”.
Kiera Jacob, Senior Administrative Coordinator – LMU CARES Judicial Affairs, added “Briana wholly embodies the mission of LMU. As someone who takes the success of others personally, one can often find Briana engaged in a pep talk with a student. She challenges them to continue to learn, develop themselves for others, and fight for the cause they are passionate about. Briana’s job is to educate the students in the principles of equity, respect and human dignity, not only through her personal relationships with anyone who wanders into her life, but also through the LMU CARES workshops she has created, and the leadership classes she teaches each semester. As someone who had a hand in creating and energizing the ‘Live the Lion’s Code’ campaign, Briana lives and breathes the values of Loyola Marymount University”.
At the luncheon, when Briana heard her name announced as this year’s winner of the award, Briana was visibly moved. When asked about her feelings at that moment, she said “I was completely shocked when my name was called. The Barbara Bonney Award is so humbling, and there are so many amazing staff members at LMU. I never expected to hear my name called. I am so beyond honored to receive the highest award for staff members for doing a job that I love at a place that I love. I tell our students all of the time to follow their passions, and I am so lucky to be able to model that for them every day”.
